Bridges / Brücken / Bruggen is a double maxi-single picture disc in a gatefold sleeve. Each record side consists of one composition. Side A: Bergerslagbrook / Bergerslagbach / Bergerslagbeek, side B: Netterden channel / Netterdenscher kanal / Netterdens kanaal, side C: Rhine / Rhein / Rijn and side D: Waal / Waal / Waal. These are the names of a brook, a small channel and two rivers that flow between my birthplace (Sinderen) and my current address (Nijmegen) in the Netherlands.
To each compostion belongs a circular image, that's made up of filmstills shot on bridges over these streams. This image is printed on the sleeve as well as on the vinyl itself. By playing the record the filmstills come alive again, because they work like an animation.
Bridges / Brücken / Bruggen consists of four compositions, but it's music can vary. The four accompanying images make up the sheet music in a (photo)graphical notation for each composition. Like a moving (photo)graphicscore. This score has to be interpreted though by the performing musician(s) or composer(s) and this will result in different music at each performance, depending on the musicians (folk? classical? electronics? pop? anything?). The circular images will be the starting point and give suggestions of atmosphere, tempo, rhythm, hectics versus silence and sometimes even some lyrics.
And so the (photo)graphic design becomes literally the starting point for the music and bridges the gap between image and sound.
