The Enzymatic Orchestra
album: New Species
organic electronics with a dark edge to it
With their dark hybrid instrumental blend of cutting edge electronic music and sampled acoustics The Enzymatic Orchestra likes to fuse the old and the new and crossbreds different cultures.
From the harsh and in your face opener Some Chromes (featuring a soundpoet) to the soothing closing tune Fragile Transfer it becomes clear this unusual orchestra does not constrain itself to one style or mood. They create landscapes of sound, sometimes light and full of color, sometimes utterly dense, gloomy and murky. Fusing the legacies of both ambient guru Brian Eno and the godfather of the drone Dylan Carlson (Earth), their music evolves into an organic study on rhythm and texture. Their clever, multi layered compositions are like easter eggs, slowly unveiling delicate, melancholic melodies and intricate rhythms.
On their debut album New Species structures are being built out of snippets of orchestra ands strips of distorted drones immersed in a jungle of collage techniques and sound effects, plunging the listener into an alienating world of wonders with recurring glints of mysticism. It’s like a transition from something obnoxious and undesirable on the opener to something much more calming and almost fluid by the time the album comes to its apotheosis.
The devil is often in the detail, on this stunning debut album.
